Weatherwise, Inc. is seeking applications from candidates interested in serving as a meteorologist based in Tokyo, Japan. Weatherwise is an English-language Japanese company providing underserved communities in Japan with important weather information and service. Qualified candidates are asked to submit an application along with a resume and reel for consideration.

  • A meteorologist at Weatherwise is a professional communicator and scientist who delivers critical weather forecasts through online and broadcast media. S/he will be responsible for researching the forecast primarily for Japan but also globally as required; producing daily presentations for social media, websites, and/or broadcast media; and maintaining an online presence that supports the mission of Weatherwise. The meteorologist will be expected to work special hours during severe weather events and natural disaster situations. Weatherwise is a company that seeks to find creative solutions to communicating the weather, and the meteorologist will be expected to provide suggestions and ideas that will help further that goal.

    • A bachelor’s degree or higher in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or geosciences concentrating in meteorology

    • At least one year of experience in forecasting and live broadcasting (television and/or online)

    • A desire to move to and live in Tokyo, Japan and be willing to understand and adapt to the culture of Japan in an international context

    • A commitment to serve a full-term contract of at least two years

    • An understanding of quality graphics production and design

    • A solid knowledge of communicating weather in an easy-to-understand format

    • An ability to exhibit flexibility and calm during difficult situations, particularly with severe weather

    • Some technical knowledge with live online broadcasting and remote telework will be helpful

    • An ability to work in IT operations is a plus

    • The contract will be a two-year term with the opportunity to renew or extend should both parties agree. If you cannot commit to two years, please do not apply.

    • Your base salary, based on a four-day in-person and an additional half-day remote work schedule, will be 6,500,000 Japanese yen per year before taxes and insurance, paid in monthly installments. Should you work additional days, you will be paid for the time you work above the base salary. (This is set by the budget and cannot be negotiated at this time.)

    • The meteorologist will be expected to work special hours during severe weather events and natural disaster situations.

    • You will be expected to provide suggestions and ideas that will help further the goal of creatively communicating the weather story.

    • Your duties may include some on-air and off-air work for a broadcasting company, which will be scheduled as a part of your regular work shift.

    • The company will provide some funding for your move to Japan and will be responsible for making your transition as smooth as possible, including assistance in sponsoring a visa, searching for housing, and visits to the necessary government offices for inbound processing.

    • You will be provided with a laptop computer for work purposes, and the company will also pay for adequate Internet service in order for you to be able to work remotely from home. 

    • The company will provide health insurance coverage and participate in a pension payment plan through the employment coverage system as regulated in Japan.

    • The company will be working with a flexible time off policy. We will attempt to be as accommodating as possible for your time off requests subject to the approval by your manager.
